Qatar Airways To Debut as oneworld® Member

Oneworld is the second oldest alliance of its kind to be formed ahead of SkyTeam but behind Star Alliance.

To date, with the recent addition of Qatar Airways into its rooster, it has expanded its membership to 13. The other 12 official full member airlines include Air Berlin, American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Finnair, Iberia, Japan Airlines, LAN Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, Qantas, Royal Jordanian, and S7 Airlines of Russia.

Qatar Airways upon its induction into the alliance by October 30 this year, will become the only major airline in the Gulf region to join any global airline grouping. It is also one of only seven airlines in the world to have been rated 5-star by Skytrax for its excellence in overall quality of products and service.

The airline's admission to the alliance is said to be the fastest in the history of oneworld's membership application. This fate is only achieved if the airline has an outstanding record across all aspects in commercial aviation global standards.

The ascension of Qatar Airways into the alliance will mean nothing but good news to all its frequent flyer members. This means that their perks and privileges will increase 12 times over as they will also get to earn points when flying with other 12 member airlines and enjoy most of their privileges such as the use of lounges in all airports across their combined network.

Similarly, all the 130 million members in other 12 member airlines will start to enjoy the same oneworld privilege on Qatar Airways.

Qatar Airways has an extensive global network of 130 destinations spanning across five continents in over 70 countries. This will fortify oneworld's current global network of 850 destinations.

Its entry will be a significant milestone to the oneworld alliance as it now includes Iran, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Serbia and Tanzania - countries formerly not covered by any of the current member airlines. Additionally, travel time between Asia and Africa or Southern Europe will be significantly reduced as they will now have seamless one-stop connections either way.

The flag carrier of Qatar will be moving to its new home at the spanking and modern Hamad International Airport before the end of this year.

Qatar Airways was established in 1993 but commenced commercial operations in 1994. It has a current fleet of 125 aircraft including its cargo and mostly dominated by Airbus planes. Only 44 of them are Boeing planes including its 5 freighter planes.
