Jet Airways Plans to Buy 6 Airlines Slots Left by Kingfisher

India's second-largest airline, Jet Airways, is seeking to get six of the available slots left open by Kingfisher Airlines as the government recently withdrew all slots allotted to the doomed airline. The government recently made its decision to strip off Kingfisher all its flying rights, to both domestic and international routes.

Jet Airways is requesting the Aviation Ministry to give them six of the available entitlements. A reliable source from the airline revealed that the airline has asked the Ministry to grant them the slots which all originate from Mumbai. They are planning to use four of the slots for its domestic expansion and the remaining two for its international network.

The airline went into details by saying that they are asking the Ministry equal number of slots for morning and afternoon be given to them, though no specific destinations were revealed.

Kingfisher Airlines remained grounded after the government suspended its license in October last year and its inability to renew it after its expiry on December 31, 2012. Consequently, the government decided to remove all its flying entitlements and offer them to other Indian airlines who wish to ask for such entitlements.

Kingfisher used to have an extensive network across Indian subcontinent as well as overseas before its collapse. Some of its international routes include the Sri Lanka (35 flights per week), Thailand (21), United Emirates (21), Bangladesh (14), Hong Kong (14), Nepal (7), Singapore (7), and United Kingdom (7).

The withdrawn slots for its international network total approximately 25,000 seats each week which should be available to other airlines seeking entitlements to these eight countries.

For the record, Jet Airways is eying for these slots after all its three slots at London's premier airport, Heathrow, were sold for US$70 million to Etihad Airways, the Abu Dhabi-based airline which is rumored to be interested in investing in the Naresh Goyal-owned airline. The sale, which was made late last month, has stoked a rumor about the Gulf carrier's planned acquisition of a stake in the Indian airline anytime soon.
