Indian Carriers Slug It Out With Low Fares

With India's peak season for travel waning, the country's major carriers, once again, engage themselves in a do-or-die battle to attract air travelers.

The budget airline, SpiceJet, sparked the fare cut frenzy when it recently launched its promo offer on Monday to entice passengers to travel across the country with heavily-discounted tickets. Go Air and Jet Airways joined the frenzy on Tuesday with their own promo offers.

Jet Airways, a full-service, will hold its own promo offer for three successive days, from February 25-27, offering super low priced tickets for advanced booking. Tickets booked during the promo period will only become valid for travel between March 27 to 30, 2014.

GoAir's version of its own fare promo offers more enticing discount rate at 70% for tickets booked during the promo period from February 24 to 26. Ticket prices during the promo start from as low as Rs.1,726 for a one-way domestic travel, excluding taxes.

SpiceJet offers the biggest fare cuts among major airlines by as much as 75% in some routes during its 'Super Summer Sale' promo. The Mumbai-Delhi one-way ticket, for example, is offered to customers for as low as Rs.3,186 against the typical or regular rate of Rs.10,000. The Delhi-Goa one-way fare, on the other hand, can fetch for as low as Rs.3,737 down from the regular price of Rs.11,148.

The promo fares, the airline clarified in its website, don't include other applicable fees and taxes.

IndiGo, the country's largest airline by passenger volume, didn't want to be outsmarted by its competitors as it similarly launched its own ticket sale on Monday. The low-cost carrier offered heavily-discounted fares on selected routes for as low as Rs.1,867 for the Ahmedabad-Mumbai sector and not so high Rs.3,410 for the Mumbai-Delhi flight. The tickets booked during the February 24-26 ticket sale are valid for travel starting April 1 until June 30, 2014.

February is the usual start of the lean season in India's huge commercial aviation sector. However, with the ticket promos offered by these major airlines, people are enticed to travel regardless of needs or time of travel whenever they spot opportunities for leisure travel.

Holiday makers and leisure travelers are the primary targets for the airlines' ticket sale events because they are the ones who have the flexible time to travel whenever possible and also have the means to do so.
