Chennai Airport Returns To Normalcy

Tuesday, 8th December 2015 at 06:07am

On Monday, local and international flight activities at the Chennai airport have resumed as flood waters which had affected many parts of Chennai have subsided.

On Sunday, only partial operations were implemented wherein only daytime flights were allowed. But evening of the same day, Airport Authority of India (AAI) announced that the airport will be ready for day and night flights starting 6am of December 7.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) also conducted an evaluation of the airport's flight safety and readiness after AAI's statement.

Early last week, the airport was temporarily closed when its runway was filled with floodwater due to continuous rains. But on Saturday, as floodwaters continue to subside, airport authorities started to allow technical flights.

Subsequently, daytime commercial flights were allowed on Sunday. Air India was able to ferry around 600 passengers via five Chennai-Port Blair flights the whole day.

Some international air carriers previously stranded at the airport were also able to take off and fly towards their intended destinations.

Meanwhile, IndiGo and Jet Airways reported that they have coordinated with airport management regarding resumption of all their regular flights to and from Chennai airport.

A spokesperson for IndiGo said that its flights from Chennai airport to Delhi, Hyderabad, and Mumbai resumes Monday.

Jet Airways also commenced regular flights going to Bangalore also on Monday.

Last week, more than 30 air carriers were left stranded at the Chennai airport when continuous rains submerged its runway and other facilities with floodwater. On December 2, airport authorities had to temporarily halt operations.

About 20 international air carriers fly in and out of Chennai airport on any given day. The airport handles a daily average of 320 aircraft take-offs and arrivals.
