AirAsia Relaunches Service to Delhi and Mumbai

Travelers to and from Delhi and Mumbai will, once again, see the colors of AirAsia flying to these airports as the Malaysia-based airline resumes service to these Indian cities soon.

The resumption of its service to these cities came on the heels of the recent government's approval of a joint venture between Tata group and AirAsia Bhd. to form a local subsidiary in India. AirAsia India will soon start this year its operations.

AirAsia used to fly to Delhi and Mumbai from Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok but eventually pulled out last year citing airport charges at these cities as too prohibitively high.

AirAsia X used to mount direct flights between Delhi and Kuala Lumpur once daily while Thai AirAsia had a frequency of four flights a week between Mumbai and Bangkok.

AirAsia India is planning to make Chennai as its base of operations in India when it starts flying soon later this year. The newly-formed subsidiary will initially deploy 3 to 4 aircraft for its maiden operations. The local subsidiary has not have any plans of flying to India's two major cities of Delhi and Mumbai as it has hinted earlier that it has to skip these major cities, for the time being, for their high airport fees.

The airline started hiring applicants for its local operations in India early in April. It has also announced earlier that it has preference for India-based pilots and co-pilots. The pilots needed to apply online and those who made it to the shortlist had to fly to Bangalore for the interview.

AirAsia group of airlines is taking advantage of its extensive route network across the region. The addition of Delhi and Mumbai into its network will enable them to penetrate the local market as these two cities provide a spoke for local destinations across India.

Delhi and Mumbai airports are said to be very expensive for the low-cost airline's local subsidiary to operate from. The recent resumption of flights to these cities from Southeast Asia is an indication that AirAsia is seeing potential in the Indian market now and the years to come.
