AirAsia Exploring Opportunities For New Routes to South India

Wednesday, 14th March 2012 at 01:52am

Budget airline, AirAsia is currently looking into possible market opportunities to introduce flight schedules from Bangkok to India's southern cities.

This comes on the heels of the Thai airline's announcement of new direct flights connecting Bangkok and Chennai to start March 23. At present, AirAsia ferries air passengers to destinations that include Bangalore, Bangkok, Kolkata, Kuala Lumpur, and Tiruchirapalli, among other cities.

The airline is currently studying the market based on the growing number of tourists and travelers that have been passing through the Southeast Asian country in the last few years. With the launch of their Bangok-Chennai flights five times a week, AirAsia expects a 75 to 80 percent increase in their Airbus A230 occupancy rates.

In 2011, Thailand saw an estimated 9.8 lakh (980,000) tourists coming in from India, and this year, the number is expected to balloon to 10 lakh (one million) travelers. On the other side of the coin, there were less than 100,000 tourists from Thailand who visited North Indian cities last year. AirAsia is looking to remedy this via the new Bangkok-Chennai route, and subsequently by opening other routes to cities in Southern India.

AirAsia is further throwing in a one-way introductory offer of Rs 3,999 for their Chennai to Bangkok flights to bring in more Indian tourists to Thailand. This promo airfare is applicable for online bookings made between the period of March 9 to March 15 for travel from July 1, 2012 to January 31, 2013.

The airline is also looking into opening flight routes from Bangkok and other cities in Thailand to India's Bangalore, Kochi, and Hyderabad.
