Air India Pilots End 58-day Strike

Air India striking pilots had recently agreed to go back to work within two days' time after 58 days of dispute between them and the management. The Delhi High Court was informed on Tuesday by the pilots about their decision to put an end their almost two months strike.

The pilots decided to end their strike after the airline management assured them to address the issues they have brought up earlier before the walkout. The 101 pilots who were reportedly terminated during the strike will be reinstated, ten of whom are officers of the Indian Pilots Guild. There were a total of 434 pilots who went on strike.

The sacked pilots, however, were instructed to submit their letters to the court stating their intent to go back to work.

Earlier, the management was asked by the court to address their concerns that resulted to the 58-day long strike and settle the issues the soonest possible time.

The petition of the pilots was already disposed off by the court and both sides were requested to appear before the Chief Labour Commissioner, the conciliator of labor cases.

They alleged that the sacking of the 101 pilots by the management was anti-union and created a chasm between them and the management.

The management, however, maintained that the pilots violated the order issued by the court and that they (management) would only agree to sit with them if they concluded their strike unconditionally.

The almost two months-long strike cost the airline dearly to the tune of Rs 600 crore, according to the management. The cancellation of flights, mostly international destinations, also caused undue inconvenience to the traveling public.

The dispute stemmed from the management's decision to train all the pilots (to operate Boeing Dreamliners) from both merged airlines to which the Air India pilots protested alleging that their seniority and experience was not protected by the new management.
