Tirupati Airport with the airport code of TIR (IATA) is located at Tirumala. Tirupati is the state of Andhra Pradesh, India. The airport is at a distance of 14 Km from the city of Tirupati. The coordinates of the airport are Longitude: 79° 32’ 36” E and Latitude: 13° 37’ 57” N. The airport operates under the jurisdiction of Airports Authority of India. Tirupati airport is connected to major cities of India like Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Vishakhapatnam. The airport is equipped with night landing facilities with the additional increase in the runway by 900 metres.

Tirupati is a pilgrimage city, located in the Chittoor district of the state of Andhra Pradesh, at the foothills of Eastern Ghats at a distance of 550 Km south of the city of Hyderabad, which is the capital of the state, and 150 Km north of Chennai. The city is one of the busiest pilgrimage centres in the world and caters to traffic of millions of pilgrims. The city is most famous for the Venkateswara Swamy temple, dedicated to Lord Venkateswara. The city also handles millions of tourists who come to visit its various temples.

The city is located on the top of a hill, which comprises of seven hills, representing the seven hoods of Adisesha, hence the name Tirupati. The Tirupati airport is a domestic airport that has flights to Hyderabad, Vizag, Chennai, New Delhi via Hyderabad and Bangalore. The airport is closest to the Chennai International Airport, which is at a distance of 130 Km.

The Tirupati Airport itself is under development as an International Airport. A Foundation Stone was laid by the Prime Minister on the 2nd of September 2010 for the new terminal of the planned upgrade. The airport has only one domestic terminal. Jet Airways, Kingfisher Airlines, and Indian Airlines are amongst the domestic airlines that operate from here.

Public transport

The city of Tirupati is connected to the airport by local city buses and transport services run by the government operated APSRTC. Taxis and cars are available for rent by private operators. The city has well-planned network of roads with synchronised traffic system. Buses, taxis, and rickshaws are easily accessed at the arrival area.
