Thiruvananthapuram International Airport TRV

Thiruvananthapuram International Airport with the international code TRV (IATA) is one of three international airports of the state of Kerala (India), located at Shanghumugham, 7km from the city of Thiruvananthapuram. The airport lies 3.7 Km to the west from the city centre, and 16 Km from the Kovalam beach. It operates under the jurisdiction of Airports Authority of India. It is also known by the British name of Trivandrum by most of the travel agencies.

Thiruvananthapuram International Airport connects to too many international cities and domestically to major cities of India including Chennai, Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore. It also functions as an important link to SAARC member countries of Sri Lanka, Maldives, Middle East, and South East Asia. It has the longest runway of 10,000 feet in length and 14 feet at elevation.

Thiruvananthapuram International Airport was established in 1932, and the International services were initiated by Air India, followed by Air Lanka (Sri Lankan) and Air Male. The airport also stands out for being the first International airport outside the metropolitan city.

The increasing number of international passengers initiated the establishment of a third terminal in 2006 constructed by Airports Authority of India (AAI) to enhance the development of the city, the IT sector, and the Tourism industry. The terminal was completed in the July of 2010, which took up an area of 20, 000 sq. metres with its tubular design. The terminal can easily handle passengers of two A-300s and one Boeing 747 aircraft at the same time.

The passengers can check-in at any counter because of the installation of a Common Users Terminal Equipment (CUTE) system. X-ray machines are attached to the either side of the conveyor belts for faster clearance of baggage. The check in area has a floor of 950 sq. metres and the arrival area holds 570 sq. metres. The annual handling capacity of the terminal is about 1.33 millions. The entrance to the terminal is from the Chaka-Eenchakkal road, and a bridge across the Parvathy Pauthanar facilitates a link to the Kazhauttam-Inchivila NH 47 bypass.

Due to the new terminal at the Thiruvananthapuram International Airport, it can now handle about 1600 passengers, the number formerly being 500. The terminal 1 caters solely to domestic flights and terminal 2 caters to the international flights. The airlines operating from the airport are Air Arabia, Air Asia, Air India, Air India Express, Emirates, Etihaad Airways, Indian Airways, Jet Airways, Kingfisher Airlines, Kuwait Airways, Maldivian, Oman Air, Qatar Airways, Silk Air, Sir Lankan Airlines and Tiger Airways.

Public Transport

The airport can be reached via public transport like buses, taxis, and auto rickshaw from the Padmanabha Swamy temple. There are many signs along the main road heading out to the airport.

There are a number of local car hire companies with drivers or self drive facilities at the airport. Parking is also facilitated both for short and long periods. A city bus service runs between the airport and the city bus terminal. Taxis and auto rickshaws are available outside the terminals. Pre-paid taxis available for booking can be called on at the arrival counters.

Facilities

There are no business or conference facilities at the airport, but internet access is possible through cyber cafes and Wi-Fi connections throughout the International terminal. Restaurants, Postal services, money exchange, medical aid, and assistance of wheel chairs to the handicapped are also available. The Post office and a Bank branch are around the arrival area of the International terminal. Duty free shops and local shops selling books, gift items and mobiles phones are on both sides of the terminals. In addition to the lost and found office in the International terminal, the airport has dormitory accommodation and retiring rooms for transit passengers.
