Srinagar Airport SXR

Srinagar is the capital of India's northern most state of Jammu and Kashmir. It is connected by air by the Sheikh ul Alam Airport, commonly known as Srinagar airport. It has the IATA code SXR and the ICAO code VISR. The airport is located 14km from Srinagar at an elevation of 5,429 ft, and has two runways (13/31). The runway length is 1,290 ft and has an asphalt surface.

The airport has been named after one of the greatest saints of Kashmir, Sheikh Noor-ud-din-Noorani, commonly known to Kashmiris as Sheikh-ul-Alam. The airport is a public/military airport and was recently extensively renovated in 2009. The military presence is quite visible at the airport.

Indian airlines, GoAir, IndiGo, Jet Airways, JetLite, KingFisher, and SpiceJet operate flights to Srinagar. Air India Express operates regular flights to Dubai from Srinagar. During the season of Muslim pilgrimage, special flights ferry pilgrims to and from Saudi Arabia. No international airlines operate flights to Srinagar.

Srinagar airport has an international and a domestic terminal. In both the terminals, there are facilities like snacks and beverages counters, money exchange counters, and ATM machines.

Arrivals

Arriving passengers have to fill out a form and hand it over to the security staff. Your personal information, duration of stay, and the place you will be staying at during your stay has to be filled in. If you have arrived on an international flight, you will have to get your baggage checked at the Customs counters.

Public transport

There are car rental service counters in both the terminals, from where you can hire a car with a chauffeur to get to the city. The car rental services have standard and deluxe cars and coaches for hire. Outside the terminal buildings, you will find a horde of three wheeler taxis (auto rickshaws).

Security

Very strict security measures have been implemented in Srinagar, and you will see many military personnels inside and outside the airport. While flying in and out of Srinagar, you are not allowed to carry cameras and cell phones, and you cannot photograph the breath taking views of the Himalayas.
