Sambre Airport IXG

Sambre Airport IXG is also recognised as Belgaum Airport. As there has been an adverse increase in the potential of tourism and air traffic, much concentration is being given to the airports.

Location

The Sambre Airport IXG is located as latitude: 15°51′33″N and longitude: 074°37′06″E. This airport has been constructed on a land of 440.30 acres. The elevation is 2487 Feet/758 metres. This airport is situated in the state of Karnataka in a city called Belgaum. The location of the Sambre Airport is such that it is 12 km away from city railway station; hence, reaching it is not too much of trouble for the passengers or travellers. Other airports that exist nearby include Hubli airport, Kolhapur airport, and Goa Airport; each of these is 95, 100 and 160 km away respectively.

Structure

The Sambre Airport IXG is a domestically operated airport. It has one domestic terminal. There is a single boarding gate. The domestic terminal area is around 1160 sq. metres. This area constitutes three check-in counters. The parking capacity specifically for car and bus is still under development.

Futuristic view

In order for the airport to be able to cater to large aircrafts like Boein 737 – 800 and A 320, it needs an extension of 800 m. The width of the runway does not need any alteration, however the length does. The work for improvisations and modifications on the Sambre/ Belgaun Airport IXG is being done on full capacity. The government has been able to capture an area of 298 acres around the Sambre airport to improvise it further. The responsibility of modifying and updating the Sambre airport IXG will be handed over to the Airports Authority of India, which is also recognized as AAI.

Currently, there are no scheduled commercial flight operations in Sambre Airport IXG. However, as per the plans, the Kingfisher airlines have objectives regarding continuing services to Bangalore and Mumbai. There is a possibility that the flight running between Hubli-Bangalore-Hyderabad might be extended until Belgaum, which will connect Hyderabad sector to Belgaum for the first time ever.
