Mysore Airport MYQ

Mysore is the second largest city of the Indian State of Karnataka. 12 Km away from the city centre of Mysore is Mysore Airport. The airport is also known as Mandakalli Airport and Chamraja Vadiyar Airport.

History

The history of the airport dates back to 1948, when the grounds were laid for making the airstrip of this airport. At that time, a national newspaper service used to drop its newspaper bundles using a Dakota at the airport. It was in 1980s when the airport was last seen performing its services efficiently. At that time, a company named Vayudoot ran a feeder service at this airport. It became obsolete after that.

It was in March 2009 that the Civil Aviation in India approved the reconstruction of this airport. At that time, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation approved the installation of micro lights on the runway. After the orders that were passed, a terminal was built to capacitate 200 passengers, and two runways were also made of the track length of 1,740 metres and 1,350 metres.

Additionally, 174 acres of land were allocated, and the initial plan was to build the land with night landing facility to accommodate the Airbus 320 and Boeing 737. A separate taxi pathway was also established. At that time, the State Government also provided land for this entire development of Phase I and pledged to provide free water, electricity, and security to the airport for the first five years.

Hence, the airport, which was built and developed by the Airports Authority of India at a cost of Rupees 82 Crores was inaugurated by the then Chief Minister of Karnataka. However, due to problems of acquisition of land, the development Phase II of the airport was halted. The second phase of development has been started now, and it is hoped that by the completion of the second phase, the upgrading of the airport will be done for efficient traffic controlling systems, meteorological departments, and upgrading of the terminals.

Operating Airlines

When the first phase was completed, Kingfisher Airlines started operating its ATR flights on the airport, and the first ATR flight with 36 guests and 24 passengers landed at Mysore Airport on 1st October, 2010. After that day, Kingfisher Airlines have been operating daily flights to and from Bangalore and Chennai.

The airport now has a 1.74 Km long runway, which can easily accommodate the ATR-72 sized aircrafts. However, the government has also ordered extending the runway to around 2.6 Km in order to accommodate Boeing 737 and A320 aircrafts.

Ground Transportation

Since Mysore Airport is just a few kilometres away from the main city centre, the passengers can easily find buses, taxis, and auto rickshaws. Moreover, you can easily find car hire companies near the airport also. Some of the famous car hire companies operating in Mysore are Alpha Travel House, Guru Tours, and Travels, Skyway international Travels, Travel India, FCM Travel Solutions and Safe Wheels Tours and Travels.
