Vistara To Face Stiff Competition Against Rivals

Friday, 2nd January 2015 at 01:58am

Vistara's entry into India's crowded and troubled aviation space may be a bad timing to many as the industry is currently in a crisis.

But the new start up seems undaunted with its mission to fly and serve customers with a promise to turn every journey into a memorable experience"a new feeling in the air.

Its launch last January 9 is the start of a journey which, as what many experts see, won't be a smooth one.

First, there are Air India and Jet Airways, both full-service giants that obviously have gone through the test of times and are tough rivals to take on. Second, the industry is in trouble with most airlines struggling to curb losses and tame their indebtedness.

With Vistara's launch date last January 9, the two giant rivals have preempted its ticket promo offers by offering prospective customers much lower fares. On the Delhi-Mumbai sector, for example, Jet Airways and Air India offer one-way tickets for as low as Rs.6,200 and Rs.6,500, respectively. The promo prices offered by the two airlines on routes that Vistara will launch this January are 20-40% cheaper than the new airline. Both established rivals even extend their offers up to December 31 hoping to keep their customers stay loyal to them.

Vistara, obviously, has been outsmarted by the two as it could only offer a one-way ticket for as low as Rs.7,500 for the Delhi-Mumbai flight.

According to online travel booking agency Yatra.com, tickets by Vistara don't sell as fast as that of its two giant rivals.

The two established airlines take advantage of their stronger and wider sales network across the country plus their aggressiveness in marketing their routes and promos to outsell Vistara on its inaugural route from Delhi to Mumbai.

Vistara will be operating from its hub in New Delhi's Indira Ghandi International Airport and will be using a fleet of five A320 aircraft during the first year of operations. It currently has two aircraft and a third one is also set to join the fleet next week. The fourth and fifth jetliners are scheduled to arrive this month.
