Three More Airports in the Asia-Pacific Region Passes Airport Carbon Accreditation

Three additional airports in the Asia-Pacific region have passed the Airport Carbon Accreditation from the prestigious ACI Asia-Pacific.

The ACI Asia-Pacific is the offshoot of the ACI Europe that launched Airport Carbon Accreditation in 2009 providing an independent assessment on the airports' management and reduction of their carbon dioxide emissions. The program impressed and got the support from ICAO and in 2011, the accrediting company extended its cover to the Asia-Pacific region. The very first airport to be given such recognition in the region is Abu Dhabi International Airport in the United Arab Emirates. The accreditation body made progress in its objective as it received positive feedback from the major airports in the region.

These airports were given certificates of recognition during the 7th ACI Asia-Pacific Annual Conference, Regional Assembly & Exhibition held in Singapore. The three airports were recognized for their efforts to curb down carbon emissions during the period they applied for accreditation.

Changi Airport as well as Mumbai International Airport received the Mapping (Level 1) award while Bangalore International Airport got the Reduction (Level 2) award. In total, there are now three accredited airports in the region in the Mapping level and one in the Reduction level.

The regional director of the ACI Asia-Pacific, Mrs. Patti Chau, has extended her congratulatory notes to the three airports on their efforts to slash down carbon emissions. She said further that she is proud of the member airports which are keen and sincerely adopt programs to minimize the dreaded pollutants released into the atmosphere. As of the time being, more airports in the region are showing interest and in the process of applying for accreditation to become zero-emission airports and be recognized as well. Their enthusiasm for accreditation only shows their commitment to the preservation and care for the environment.

The Airport Carbon Accreditation works independently managed by WSP Environment & Energy that enforces accreditation measures for airports annually. The program is overseen by an Advisory Board. To get accreditation, airports' carbon footprints must be verified according to ISO14064 standard or Greenhouse Gas Accounting.
