A man, believed to be the one who made a call to the airline office, was arrested from his home after his phone number was tracked by the police detective of the Kolkata Police.
A resident of Bongaon in this city, Prasanta Biswas, allegedly called the airline's Kolkata office and threatened to hijack one of Air India's planes. It was not certain, however, which flight would be hijacked and which route.
Kolkata Police quickly mobilized its Special Task Force (STF) unit together with the team from the detective department and instructed to track the caller's number which resulted to his immediate arrest. He was brought to the city police precinct for interrogation and may possibly face charges for making such threat.
After the call, airport police immediately reinforced security at Kolkata's primary gateway, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport. K-9 unit was immediately mobilized to augment its normal security measures, checking every crook and cranny of the terminal buildings and other structures within the airport and nearby areas.
Aside from the usual scanner machines to screen passengers' luggage, manual inspection on every luggage was also employed by airport security personnel.
The said call was reportedly received at around 5:40PM by the staff at the airline's booking office.
