India's premier international airline, Jet Airways, became the first airline in India to get 500,000 fans on Facebook. After about a two year period, Jet Airways gained the 5 lakh milestone in Facebook which perhaps is the leading and most influential website for social networking.

Jet Airways launched its Facebook fan page, www.facebook.com/jetairways, on January 19, 2010. The airline's business page sought to provide guests with current news updates about Jet Airways' flight schedules, route additions, new customer programs, special offers, services, etc. It also aimed to give people a place where they can share suggestions and experiences just like an online forum.

To celebrate the prestigious milestone, the airline celebrated by initiating the latest Facebook enhancement, the new Facebook Timeline. Timeline allows businesses to provide its clients with a more interactive and qualitative user experience. Timeline enables companies to communicate with their clients and keep a good social image by sharing stories, marketing campaigns and promotions and even milestones. Timeline's easy to use interface will make it easy for guests to check company events, activities and updates in the past. The use of social networking has become a strategy for businesses to easily reach out and communicate to a large number of people on real time.

Jet Airways' Chief Commercial Officer, Sudheer Raghavan, talked about the unique milestone achieved on Facebook saying, "Our innovative marketing initiatives with strategic use of social media tools reflect our endeavour to deliver unique opportunities to our guests. Jet Airways has been a pioneer in the Indian aviation sector in terms of recognizing and harnessing the power of social media networks to listen, engage and respond to our guests. The journey towards reaching the 500,000 fan milestone has involved a great deal of research and analysis to ensure we understand and engage with our guests effectively. The introduction of initiatives like Jet Facts, Jet Polls, Flying Tips and Jetstinations has been well appreciated by our fans who find such information useful and engaging. Besides this, Facebook provides us with an opportunity to communicate real time with guests."

Jet Airways also used other social networking sites like LinkedIn, the world's largest and most popular professional network which has about 90 million members. Jet Airways was also the first Indian operator, to be part of a location-based social networking mobile application foursquare.
