India's SpiceJet announced today that it will increase the frequency of its international operations from Cochin International Airport, which probably means it has selected this airport to be its hub for travel outside of India.

The carrier has revealed it has added more flights from Kochi to the Gulf region and has also put more planes on routes to Male, Maldives that go via Kochi from other airports in India.

The company said the following in a press statement:

"Representatives of SpiceJet and officials of Cochin International Airport held a discussion meeting in Kochi on this issue today. At present the airline operates to two international destinations, Dubai and Male, Maldives from Kochi. The airline has seen good traffic on these routes and now plans further expansion from the city on these routes and potential new ones. Kochi is also a transit airport for SpiceJet connecting various cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai, Pune and Kolkata among others to Male and Dubai."

SpiceJet Increases Gulf Region Connectivity

The Indian carrier is also looking for opportunities to widen its presence in the Gulf region by putting additional flights to Dubai. The airliner also wants to increase the frequency on routes from Kochi to other popular tourist destinations such as Muscat.

In a statement issued to the media, Sanjiv Kapoor, chief operating officer of SpiceJet said:

"SpiceJet has seen excellent demand from Kochi for its flights on both domestic as well as the international routes. The Maldives is an easily accessible and increasingly popular destination that we want to provide more connection options to through Kochi from various points in India, and the Gulf region has a lot of migrants from the State and offering affordable and convenient travel option to them is our commitment."

Right now, the only low-cost carrier in India, aside from SpiceJet, to offer international flights is Air India, which does so via its Trivandrum hub.
