The AirAsia group is already operating one of the largest fleet among low-cost carriers in the world, at 170 aircraft, but is looking to increase it by 13 more aircraft to bring its total to 183 by next year.

Before the end of this year, the group will take delivery of 3 of the A320s and the rest will be arriving by next year, this according to AirAsia India CEO, Mittu Chandilya.

The 13 aircraft delivery will all be allocated to the group's newest member, AirAsia India which has just commenced operations in June this year. Currently, the Indian subsidiary operates two A320ceo aircraft on 5 routes and 5 destinations.

The airline opted to use the new-generation A320ceo for its fuel efficiency via sharklets technology.

AirAsia recently announced that it is set to launch a couple of new routes next week though it refused to reveal the names of the two destinations. However, rumor has it that one of the two destinations could be an Indian city.

AirAsia India is a joint venture between Tata Sons and AirAsia Bhd. Tata Sons, India's largest conglomerate, is not new to airline business. It is, in fact, the aviation pioneer in India when it started the Tata Airlines in 1932 before it was taken over by the government.

Tata Sons is holding 30% of the total stakes while AirAsia Bhd. holds the majority stakes, with 49%. The rest is held by another private Indian investor, Telestra Tradeplace, with 21%.
