Millions of Indian travelers will benefit from now until April 15 as major Indian carriers slash their ticket prices to lure them to fly during this period which is traditionally considered as a lean season in the country's travel industry.

Setting the blaze is SpiceJet who recently announced a mega sale promo, which saw its ticket prices slashed by up to 50%. A few hours after SpiceJet's announcement, Air India, GoAir and IndiGo made their own announcement for similar seat sale. Jet Airways is the only other major carrier that has yet to do the same.

Within a few hours of SpiceJet's announcement of its seat sale, the online bookings through its website spiked up, according to India's online travel agency, Yatra.com official. When the other three large carriers made their separate announcement a few hours later, a massive 250% increase in online bookings was experienced by the travel agency.

Sharat Dhall, Yatra.com president, also disclosed that travelers must have been lured by the heavily-discounted tickets which went down to as low as Rs.3,355 for the Delhi-Mumbai flight.

According to experts, the sale would definitely stimulate demand even though people don't have immediate plans for travel on lean season. The airlines carefully choose seats and days on sale where travel is normally at its leanest in order not to compromise flights which are normally in high demand.

SpiceJet's promo offers travelers as much as 50% discount on limited seats to almost all of its domestic destinations for as long as flights are booked at least 30 days in advance prior to travel. GoAir matched SpiceJet's seat sale with its own heavily-discounted fares which range from 40 to 50% off depending on the flight's departure.

The state-owned carrier, Air India, on the other hand, offers similar 50% markdown on all domestic flights. Air India's offers base fares for as low as Rs.1,357 which will start on Wednesday.

The simultaneous seat sales by major carriers are believed to be a good strategy to encourage both leisure and corporate travelers to come up with their short-term travel plans. According to a travel agency executive, they have already experienced unusual increase in bookings for travel meant for summer.
