Calcutta Airport

Calcutta Airport, also known as Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose international airport is located at “Dum Dum” and falls at the distances of around eighteen km from the metropolis. This airport is a doorway to states of north east. Also, it is the airport where first cargo terminal of India was established in the year of 1975.

The domestic hub of this airport was established in the year 1995 and was renamed as “Netaji Subhash Bose international Airport”. The airport is relatively small and welcomes around five million passengers yearly.

Calcutta Airport has separate points for both domestic as well as international flights. Around ten major airlines operate right from this airport including Jet Airways, Alliance Air, Indian Airlines, Blue Dart Ltd and Air Sahara. The domestic terminal operates the flights of Indian airlines; air India regional, SpiceJet, Kingfisher airlines, Indigo airlines, JetLite and Paramount Airways. The cargo terminal operates Jade Cargo, Singapore Airlines Cargo, Lufthansa Cargo, Etihad Crystal Cargo and air India cargo. The different facilities provided at Calcutta Airport include wheel chair for handicapped visitors, medical facilities, telephone facility in security hold area, room for child care, trolleys and inter terminal bus service. Interestingly, all these services are free of cost.

Transport

You can reach at city center from this airport by hiring a prepaid taxi from the counter of Bengal Taxi Association. It operates for around twenty four hours and is situated on the left side as you move towards exit area of international arrival area. From the month of December to January, intense fog hangs on Calcutta Airport between 2 A.M. to 8 A. M. Therefore, the travelers need to consider all these things before planning any trip to Calcutta.

Public bus service

A regular public bus services is run from the office of Indian Airlines to the airport and stops at some major accommodation units of city for pickups. Metered taxies are other reliable mean of transportation and are also tremendously cheap. These metered taxis can be called across town at anytime easily and from arrival points at outside of the airport.

Most domestic flights from Calcutta Airport to nearest thirty centers are within the country including Chennai, Bangalore, Agartala, Shhillong, Lilabari, Nagpur, Hyderabad, Delhi and many more. The airport is also connected further to various international destinations by numerous carriers such as Hong Kong, Tokyo, Bangkok, London, Rome as well as Moscow and New York.
