Shimla Airport SLV
Shimla Airport, also known as Jubbarhatti Airport, is a domestic airport of the capital city of Himachal Pradesh, Shimla (also known as Simla) with the airport code of SLV. Shimla is a popular summer resort, approximately 115 Kms from Chandigarh, the nearest major city and 365 Km from New Delhi the nation’s capital. The operation comes under the jurisdiction of the Airports Authority of India. The city is named after a goddess “Shyamala Devi”, an incantation of the Hindu Goddess “Kali”.
The airport although small, and handles only domestic flights with a maximum terminal capacity of 25 passengers, is still a comfortable connection to the resort station of Shimla. Regular flights operate between the capital city of Delhi and Shimla. The airport receives flights from Indian Airlines and Jagson Airlines. Shimla Airport is close to the Chandigarh Airport, which is convenient for foreign tourists who choose to travel via the major cities in India. Shimla airport also connects to Kullu, which is another popular tourist spot.
The airstrip is visible across the Shimla valley from the Chandigarh-Shimla highway. Small aircrafts like the 18 seater Dronier can operate from the airport.
Shimla is accessible by bus, cabs and by train. The easiest way to reach Shimla is from Delhi to Kalka and then to Shimla. Buses leave in regular frequency other then buses provided by the HPTDC (Himachal Pardesh Tourism Development Corporation). Other vehicles like jeeps, Tata Sumos are also accessible. These buses leave from Delhi, Jaipur, Gurgaon, Chandigarh, Jalandar, Amritsar, Phathankot, Haridwar, and Dedhradun.
The Airport recently received an aviation observatory, which will make it easier for the flights to land under the instance of bad weather. The hill stations are prone to unpredictable weather; hence, this initiative will make the flights much more safe and simple. Requests have been made for advanced technology by the Government of Himachal Pradesh for the airport, so that natural disasters can be handled like Cloud burst.
Shimla Airport is small; hence, the facilities available are very basic, including Taxi/ Cab services and Customer Help Service.
