Salem Airport SXV

Location

Salem Airport is located in the town of Kamalapuram, which is located at a 20 minutes drive from the main Salem City Centre. The airport serves the Salem city and also the districts of Salem, Dharmapuri, Nammakal and the regions of Erode and Krishnagiri.

This airport is strategically and geographically important because it provides access to famous places like Thiruvengadu, Sankari, Bhavani, Rasipuram, Attur, and Mettur.

Attractions

Additionally, the airport also acts as a gateway to many famous tourist spots such as Yercard(Shervarayan Range), Hogenakkal Waterfalls, Kiliyur Falls, Kavery peak, Tharamangalam, Mettur Dam, Poiman Karadu, Sitthar Koil (Heritage Temple), Belur, Uttamacholapuram, Kandashramam, and Sugavaneshwarar temple.

This airport has a long history regarding its 136-acre land. The land on which the airport was built was donated by industrialists and local traders. However, since 1993, there was no commercial operation of flights on the airport. The reason of this was the reluctance of the airlines to invest and to land their flights on this part of the land.

In between, the NEPC airlines took a stand to operate its flights on the 1,806-metre long runway airport, but vanished after sometime due to poor benefaction. The Aviation Authority of India kept updating the airport and even though they made it ready for operations, no airline company operated due to the fear of lack of patronage.

While Salem airport was undergoing operational development, Air Deccan agreed to start its operations on the airport, but the company itself merged with Kingfisher Airlines that had to fulfil the commitment done by Air Deccan by providing flights to and from Chennai.

The airport got so popular that the first flight from Salem Airport to Chennai had only one vacant seat. Hence, after waiting for 16 years, the airport got back into operation. The airport currently has a terminal capacity of 100 passengers (50 for arrival and 50 for departure) and the parking apron can easily accommodate two Boeing 737 planes.
