Rourkela Airport RRK
The Rourkela Airport is like a private airport. It is located in the city of Rourkela, India. Its IATA code is RRK. The length of the runway is 5957ft at an elevation of 672ft. The map coordinates of this airport are longitude - 84° 49’ 0” E and latitude - 22° 16’ 0” N.
It was constructed by the Tata Iron and Steel Company, early in the 1950s. The main purpose of building this airport was to manage their own air transportations, specifically officials of the company, who were visiting the nearby areas for the material required for their industries. Similarly, the airport was used to transport the required material to other areas of the country. The main course of transportation of the officials used to be between Rourkela and Jamshedpur. The airstrip was used only for a small period. It was later taken over by the Airports Authority of India.
For some time, regular flights were operated on the route of Kolkata-Rourkela-Ranchi Vayudoot. This remained in practice for a short while, but their operating cost was too high, so the flights were reduced. The airport was finally taken over by the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) for their personal use. Since then it has been used for private flights.
Facilities at Rourkela Airport
As this is not a public airport, therefore no usual facilities are available at the airport. Similarly, the transportation to and from the airport is also private that the company operates itself.
