Vistara Takes Delivery Of 3rd Aircraft

Vistara is now in the thick of things when it launched its inaugural operations last January 9 after receiving its air operator's permit (AOP) early last month from the aviation regulator, DGCA.

Part of the preparations for the launch was the acquisition of aircraft for the fleet during its maiden operations. The airline is expected to take delivery of another A320 aircraft this week to join the other two similar jetliner that it has already acquired last year.

The full-service carrier will be operating a fleet of narrow-body A320 airliner for its domestic operations. It is planning to acquire two more similar aircraft within the month to bring its initial fleet to 5 aircraft.

Vistara is a brainchild of a joint venture between India's largest business conglomerate, Tata Sons, and Singapore Airlines. It was established in October 2013 following approval by Foreign Investment Promotion Board of the owners' application for a joint venture. As per newly-amended FDI law, Singapore Airlines is limited to own up to 49% of the total stakes while Tata Sons holds the majority share with 51%.

The airline will operate from its hub in New Delhi's Indira Ghandi International Airport with three initial routes namely, Delhi-Mumbai, Delhi-Ahmedabad, Mumbai-Ahmedabad.

The launch of its inaugural operations last January 9 fell on the last day of the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas festivities, which took place in Gujarat's new capital, Gandhinagar last January 7-9, 2015. The city will also host the 7th edition of the Vibrant Gujarat Global Investors Summit this January 11-13, 2015.

Gandhinagar is just 23 kilometers north of Ahmedabad, the former capital and largest city of Gujarat. Both cities are served by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport which is located 9 kilometers north of Ahmedabad.

The delivery of the third aircraft was supposed to take place October last year, but had to be postponed after it failed to secure its operating license on time.

The arrival of the third A320 will be joined by two more similar planes within this month to complete the 5-aircraft fleet that the airline plans to have during the first year of operations.

Aside from Delhi, Ahmedabad and Mumbai, Vistara also plans to add Bangalore, Goa, Hyderabad, Chandigarh, Jammu, Srinagar, and Patna to its network within the year.
