SpiceJets Canceled Flights Irk Customers

It is customary for many low-cost carriers and some full-service airlines, for that matter, to hold ticket promo months ahead to fill their seats on flights that usually fall on lean season in the hope of maximizing their sales.

SpiceJet, like most of its rivals in the budget travel sector, regularly holds promo sales offering tickets at unusually low rates on routes that are traditionally lucrative, but served by multiple airlines to attract customers.

Recently, however, SpiceJet has become the recipient of calls from irate customers following a series of flight cancellations in recent months.

According to some reports, travel agencies and the airline's call center have been overwhelmed with calls from frustrated customers whose travel plans have been ruined due to the cancellations.

Many customers across the country have received text messages from the airline informing them of the unpleasant news a few days after they booked tickets.

One customer care executive admitted that they receive an unusual volume of calls in recent weeks that caused the network to jam, getting irate customers frustrated even more.

A certain journalist admitted he booked a ticket in September this year for the Chennai-Guwahati flight to attend a friend's wedding. Three days later, he received a text message from SpiceJet advising him of the flight cancellation, much to his dismay. He was advised to call the customer care center to re-book his flight.

He did as told, but was unable to get through even after several attempts to call the airline's customer care center. So he turned to the airline's Twitter page and posted his concern. Fortunately, after 2 hours from posting, he got a call from the airline informing him that the next available flight for rebooking was a week after the original date. He had no other options but ask for a refund and cancel his trip altogether as going to his destination after the wedding is pointless.

All in all, the low-cost carrier has canceled almost 40 flights over the past few months.

The cancellation of flights was due to the lack of planes as it has to return some of them to its lessors after their lease contracts expired. Since July of this year, it has already returned seven B737s to the leasing companies, shrinking its fleet down to its current number of 43 aircraft.
