Federal Aviation Administration Ups India's Air Safety Status

The US Federal Aviation Administration, the government agency primarily tasked to control and monitor US civil aviation recently upped India's air safety rating. Top air carriers in India sees this as a major boost.

The safety rating of India's airlines slid from category 1 to category 2 about two years ago owing to some deficiencies in air safety oversight according to Anthony Foxx, US Secretary of Transportation. Since then, India has taken remedial steps, dealt with the issues raised by the agency, and consequently regained its category 1 status.

FAA's favourable rating didn't come as a surprise according to India's air authorities, citing that they've exerted great effort in order to rebound to category 1.

According to sources, India's aviation group focused on improving work efficiencies and hired additional personnel tasked to inspect flight operations.

The improved rating means that two of India's air carriers, Jet Airways and Air India can expand their existing volume of flights to the US.

Dhiraj Mathur, PricewaterhouseCooper (PwC) Executive Director said that this is very good news for the country's entire aviation industry. He mentioned that the US is one of the preferred countries of destination among Indian tourists.

Of late, there has been a sizeable growth in the number of Indians touring the world. Domestic air travels among the locals were observed to have grown at a much faster rate with IndiGo taking the largest chunk of this rapidly growing market.

Meanwhile, Vistara, one of India's newly launched air carrier isn't taking the back seat either. It disclosed plans to take on flight destinations beyond India, eyeing international flights to the US and the European region as well.

The upgrading happened in the midst of a string of bans imposed by some Asian countries on Thailand's air carriers following an international audit. Of these countries however, Japan reconsidered its position and granted a temporary reprieve.
